Understanding The Need For Control – Season 9 of The Reed Manga Series- Episode 1
Understanding the need for control is not optional. ⚠️It’s essential because it reveals something deeper: the hidden forces shaping your decisions, your relationships, your reality.
At its core, the need for control is survival. Our ancestors faced chaos. Wild and unpredictable Nature. Uncertainty (Are we going to have a successful hunt today and bring food to the tribe?). Sudden Death.
Control meant safety. Predictability. Higher chance of Survival. And today? Nothing has changed. Only the battlefield has. We still chase control. In careers. In people. In outcomes.Because control feels like protection. Like certainty. Like power. 👑
But what begins as survival…slowly becomes something else. Attachment. ⛓️Rigidity. Fear in disguise. 🎭
So the real questions are:
– Why do we crave control so fiercely?
– How does this craving shape our fear?
– Fuel our insecurity?
– Distort our relationships?
Welcome to Season 9 of the Reed Manga Series, where we will dive into the tension. Between control…and chaos. Between illusion…and truth. 🔍
Control is seductive. It whispers safety. It promises certainty. And without realizing it, we organize our lives around it. From the way we plan our days to the way institutions govern societies, the need for control quietly shapes our decisions, our relationships, and our perception of reality. But beneath this constant pursuit lies a deeper question:
Why do we crave control so intensely, and what is it really costing us?
The Psychology of Control: A Survival Instinct
At its core, the desire for control is not a flaw; it’s a survival mechanism.
Early humans faced unpredictable environments where a lack of control meant danger or death. Today, the threats have evolved, but the instinct remains. We still seek control to:
- Reduce uncertainty
- Predict outcomes
- Protect ourselves from harm
Control creates the illusion that we can manage life’s chaos.
But illusion is the keyword. Because while control can offer structure, it can never eliminate uncertainty entirely.
Fear: The Hidden Driver Behind Control 😨
Fear is the engine behind our need for control.
Whether it’s:
- Fear of failure
- Fear of rejection
- Fear of loss
Our instinct is the same: regain control at all costs.
This often shows up in subtle but powerful ways:
- Overplanning every detail of life
- Avoiding situations that feel unpredictable
- Seeking constant reassurance
For example, someone afraid of failure may overwork, overprepare, and still feel anxious, because control does not eliminate fear; it only masks it.
The paradox: The more we try to control fear, the more it controls us.
Insecurity: Control as a Compensation Mechanism
If fear is the trigger, insecurity is the amplifier. Insecurity whispers: “You are not enough.”
And control becomes the response.
We attempt to control:
- How others perceive us
- The outcomes of our efforts
- The behavior of people around us
Think of the perfectionist who cannot delegate, or the partner who tries to control a relationship out of fear of abandonment. These are not acts of strength. They are attempts to stabilize a fragile sense of self. Control becomes a shield for self-doubt.
Uncertainty: The One Thing We Cannot Control 🌪️
Life is inherently unpredictable. No amount of planning, discipline, or ambition can fully guarantee outcomes. Think of the perfect career plan.
You choose the right path. You work hard. You build the right skills.
Everything is aligned. And then, life interrupts. An opportunity disappears. An industry shifts. A door you counted on… closes.
- The plan was solid
- The effort was real
- But the result changes anyway
Not because you lacked control, but because the world doesn’t operate on your timeline.
And still, we double down.
We plan harder. Push further. Try to control every variable.
Because accepting uncertainty feels like stepping into the unknown without a map.
The Cost of Control: What We Lose in the Process
The pursuit of control does not come free.
It costs us:
1. Spontaneity. When everything must be planned, nothing can be discovered.
2. Creativity. Creativity thrives in uncertainty, not rigidity.
3. Growth. Growth requires risk, and risk requires letting go of control.
4. Presence. When we focus on controlling the future, we miss the present moment.
Ironically, in trying to secure our lives, we end up narrowing them.
The Illusion of Control: A Modern Trap
Modern life amplifies the illusion that control is possible.
We are told:
- “Plan better.”
- “Optimize everything”
- “Stay ahead”
Technology, systems, and structures reinforce the belief that control equals success. But when systems become too rigid, they stop responding to reality and start defining it.
And that’s where danger begins. Because anything that cannot be controlled becomes:
- A threat
- A disruption
- Something to eliminate
This applies not only to individuals, but to societies.
A Shift in Perspective: From Control to Awareness
So if control is not the answer… what is? Not chaos. Not passivity. But awareness.
Awareness of:
- Our fears
- Our insecurities
- Our limits
The goal is not to eliminate control, but to understand it.
To know when it serves us…and when it quietly imprisons us.
Conclusion: The Question That Changes Everything
The real question is not: “How can I control more?”
But: “What am I so afraid of… that I need to control everything?”
Because sometimes, the path forward is not about tightening your grip…but learning when to let go. ✨
