How Love Became An Act of Rebellion – Episode 2 – Valentine Origin Story

Valentine broke the law. History doesn’t remember him as a criminal; it made him a Saint. Do you feel unsettled yet? Make yourself comfortable with a cup of coffee; this is going to be unsettling.

Without rules, there is chaos. Civilisation itself is built on them. Every layer of our lives is governed by rules: the countries we live in, the school our children attend, the friendships and relationships we navigate.  Rules create order. But ….

When Order hardens into Tyranny

In 3rd-century Rome, under Emperor Claudius, marriage was restricted by law. Young soldiers who married had a wife waiting. Children depend on him. To leave their wives, children, and home, they had to be convinced that the cause mattered more than the cost.

Grief bred resentment. resentment bred quietly through families. And children who grew up fatherless did not always grow up loyal.

From the Emperor’s perspective, marriage became a problem to manage. Attachment, a risk to mitigate. Love an inefficiency. 

Breaking the rule carried with it heavy consequences, and this in itself silenced reflection. 

Tyranny doesn’t announce itself loudly. It moves quietly, rationally, and eventually calls itself necessary. But here is the truth that history keeps teaching us: When rules become too rigid, they do not prevent chaos  – they create another kind of chaos – Tyranny.

The Existential Dilemma

This is the dilemma that eternally characterises human life. We must conform. We must discipline ourselves. We must follow the rules that keep the world standing.

And yet, we must also use judgment. Because there are moments when following the rules means betraying the very values those rules were meant to protect. This is where Saint Valentine enters the story.

Valentine understood something essential. Rules are sacred only insofar as they serve life. He understood the danger of breaking the rules. He did not break the law lightly; he broke it deliberately, because obedience, in this case, required staying blind to a higher moral principle. 

Valentine did not reject order. He rejected a rule that had outlived its purpose.

Conservatism, Creativity, and the Balance of Wisdom

Every healthy society needs two forces in tension. The Conservative instinct, which preserves what works, protects hard-won stability, and respects the price paid for order. And the creative instinct, which sees when the old has become rigid, outdated, or disconnected from human reality. 

Too much conservatism leads to stagnation and suffocation. Too much rebellion leads to chaos and false heroism. Wisdom is not choosing one side. Wisdom is recognising when the balance has tipped too far. Every rule was once a creative act – breaking older rules that no longer served life. 

Valentine stands precisely at that intersection. Disciplined enough to understand the rules. Courageous enough to break one when it demanded moral abdication.

Compliance Is Easy. Integrity Is Not.

Modern life is full of rules that are perfectly legal and quietly corrosive. Rules that protect systems over people, reward silence over truth, and value procedure over conscience.

Compliance asks: Is this allowed? Integrity asks: Is this right?

Valentine chose integrity. And he accepted the cost. That is what separates ethical courage from reckless rebellion: the willingness to shoulder responsibility for the consequences.

The Line Between Order and Tyranny

History, however, rarely ends where power insists it must. What Rome once feared, modern institutions have slowly been forced to relearn.

In 3rd-century Rome, marriage was discouraged because leaders believed it weakened military effectiveness. What Rome once feared, modern militaries now protect.

Today, both the Uk and US actively encourage marriage among service members, including military-to-military couples, recognising that strong personal bonds improve resilience, morale, and long-term effectiveness. People fight harder, endure longer, and recover better when they have someone to return to. Systems don’t fail when people care; they fail when people stop caring.  Love doesn’t weaken commitment. It grounds it.

The difference between tyranny and wisdom is not the presence of rules – it is whether those rules can be questioned without punishment.

True order is not rigid. It is responsive. It knows when to hold the line and when to yield to a higher principle.

Saint Valentine understood this long before institutions had the language for it. He did not reject order. He rejected a rule that demanded obedience at the expense of humanity.

And history, slowly, reluctantly, proved him right.

The Question You Have to Ask Yourself Quietly, But Don’t Have to Answer Publicly (unless you really want to)

Valentine forces a distinction most of us prefer to avoid: the difference between order that protects life and order that merely preserves itself.

Valentine’s disobedience cost him his life, and history turned him into a Saint. But most of us would not want to die to prove a point. And we shouldn’t have to.

Valentine’s story was never meant to demand martyrdom. It asks for something far quieter and far more common. Not a dramatic sacrifice. Just awareness. The challenge is not to rebel loudly, but to notice, privately, when conformity begins to ask more of you than your conscience can comfortably give. That noticing, by itself, already changes something.

So the question you have to ask yourself, but don’t have to answer publicly, is (unless you really want to): have you ever followed a rule you knew was wrong – not because you believed in it  – but because it was easier than questioning it?
