The Women Warriors In The Ancient Kingdom of Dahomey

The Holywood Movie “The Woman King” shone a bright light on the Agodjies an all-female military regiment of the Ancient Kingdom of Dahomey. In this epic historical drama, African women take center stage in the most magnificient manner. Were the Agodjies female heroes or angels of deaths? To find out more about those phenomenl women, I invite you to read my article published today on History of Yesterday.

  1. This was a great read Joanne! I never got round to watching the movie about them, but I’d read about these awesome kickass women in college. We had to do various papers on women’s history, and so I’d been really intrigued to learn about the history of women in warfare.
I ended up being kinda bummed-out by how few good examples there actually were though! (the Dahomey amazons are one of the only historical examples of a female army being successful). There was a theory with some feminist scholars that male historians had actually just removed the records from whenever women were successful in combat, because it would be a threat to male dominance. So by that theory, the only reason they ultimately recorded the story of the Dahomey amazons, is because the european men did eventually triumph over them (so it can still be used as a cautionary tale for women). We know there are so many individual women (both today and in the past) who really knew how to kick a guy’s ass, so it does seem kinda plausible to me!

    1. Penny. Thanks for stopping by, for your kind words of appreciation, and for your insightful feedback! I have no doubt that there is some kind of agenda from a male-dominated society to play down the power that women can have. For more stories of kick-ass women check out the stories of the Amazones-they used to cut off one side of their breast so that they could use their bow and arrow with more precision (the Wonder Woman movie is depicting their prowess pretty well). Also in ancient Japan there were some amazing women Samourai that people feared and respected.
